Dear Friends,

A diagnosis of childhood cancer has a profound effect, not only on the child, but on the entire family. While insurance covers much of the medical treatment, it does not cover other programs needed to support the children and their families while they cope with the severely challenging circumstances facing them.

The Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego strives to provide crucial support services to these children and their families.   To raise funds for these vital services and to honor the spirit, courage and determination of these brave children, the La Playa Unit of Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary is hosting its Fifteenth Annual Celebration of Champions® on May 15, 2010, at San Diego’s Embarcadero Marina Park North.

Any individual, corporation or group can sponsor one of these special children as their Champion.  The child, accompanied by his or her sponsor and a local celebrity, runs, walks, or is carried one hundred yards in an Olympic-style relay while holding the “Torch of Life.”  This event provides a unique opportunity for our sponsors to get to know the child and their family, and witness first hand the impact of their generosity.

This eventful day continues with a complimentary picnic lunch, entertainment, an awards presentation, and a fun-filled carnival with music and dancing.  Last year over 300 young patients participated in the relay to overwhelming cheers and encouragement from a crowd of more than 1,500.
